Local nonprofit agencies rely on volunteers to accomplish their missions. If you are interested in any of the following opportunities, please contact Mallory Broomfield via email or by calling (910) 798-3900 x 101. If you are interested in volunteering directly with United Way of the Cape Fear Area, please fill out and submit the form at the bottom of this page.

 

These are just a few of the opportunities in our community:

 

United Way of the Cape Fear Area

Financial Literacy Coach: Provide one-on-one mentoring for clients of the Cape Fear Asset Building Coalition. Mentoring will complete a continuum of services that lead individuals back to self-sufficiency.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Credit Counseling
  • Self sufficiency goal counseling
  • Tax preparation assistance
  • Budgeting assistance

 

Catholic Charities

Catholic Charities is seeking volunteers to translate various documents. Volunteers must be fluent in English and Spanish. Training is available for anyone that is interested.


Dolphin Aquatics and Fitness (Pender County)

Dolphin Aquatics and Fitness is seeking volunteers for after-school tutoring.


Salvation Army

The Salvation Army is seeking volunteers for help prepare, serve, and clean-up after meals served in their soup kitchen. They serve 3 meals a day to Salvation Army shelter residents and one meal to the public every night. The Salvation Army is also seeking volunteers to help with cleaning and sorting through donations at their family store.


Cape Fear Habitat For Humanity

Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity has several opportunities for volunteers:

  • Home Store volunteer
  • Clerical work
  • Lunch Bunch (provides lunch to on-site construction workers)
  • Construction


Brigade Boys and Girls Club

Brigade Boys and Girls Club has several opportunities for volunteers:

  • Homework Helpers and tutors
  • Leading various Arts and Crafts activities
  • Teaching classes on First Aid or Oral Health
  • Teaching any sports activity
  • Coaches for t-ball, basketball, soccer, and softball
  • Teaching aerobics and fitness classes
  • Teaching Chess
  • Leading any team-building activity
  • Mentor for Big Buddy program
  • Landscaping
  • General maintenance and cleaning
  • Leading the Gardening Program
  • General administrative work

Community Boys and Girls Club

Community Boys and Girls Club is seeking volunteers with varying talents and interests. Whether it's tutoring in a particular subject or helping out on the basketball court, they need you.


New Hope Clinic (Southport)

New Hope Clinic is seeking volunteers for the following opportunities:

  • Licensed Physicians
  • Licensed Physicians Assistants
  • Registered Nurses or LPN
  • Medical Office Assistants to help with intake and triage
  • Licensed Dentists
  • Dental Assistants
  • Translators
  • Receptionists
  • Intake/Eligibility workers
  • Pro-Bono Physicians to see patients referred by the clinic at their offices

Communities in Schools of Brunswick County

Communities in Schools of Brunswick County has the following opportunities for volunteers to get involved:

 

Working with students, long term

  • Tutoring – during school day
  • Tutoring – in After School program
  • Lunch Buddy
  • Mentoring
  • Peer Volunteers – high school students helping younger students
  • Peer Court/Dropout Prevention (Shallotte Middle & Cedar Grove Middle) - mentors
  • Teen Court and Peer Court  - adult volunteers to mentor the student volunteers through their volunteer positions as defense and prosecuting attorneys, jury monitors, etc.

Indirect student involvement

  • Teacher’s Assistant, office work – long or short term
  • Career Day, presentation to students
  • Special Events – Princess Ball, Big Toy Day, Gala – short term
  • Family Resource Centers (Leland, Ash) office assistants - long term
  • Family Resource Centers- Volunteers to assist with Christmas Basket applications

 

Kids Making It
Kids Making It has several opportunities for volunteers:

  • Volunteers to work in the wood shop/art room with our kids. Especially helpful if you have any woodworking or art skills, but even if not, just the one-on-one to work with the kids is great. 
  • Festivals and events – set up and work booths while representing KMI, educating people about the organization, and selling products.
  • Help coordinating fundraising and events
  • Weekend assistance to interact with customers who come into the shop.

  

Good Shepherd Center

  • Drivers- (with good driving record)-Mornings starting at 8:30 and afternoons 2-3pm+/-, to pick up food and deliver back to Good Shepherd, to transport clients to various locations
  • Dishwashers- Monday-Friday 8am-12:30pm
  • Desktop publishing specialist
  • Computer repair and maintenance technician
  • Musicians for client entertainment
  • Persons to develop regular sources of donated (appropriate books)
  • Overnight shelter monitors- 11pm-7am
  • Expert building painters
  • Someone who can work evenings teaching English to a Spanish-only speaking client
  • Vehicle mechanic
